What is Canine Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy uses water at a therapeutic temperature of approximately 28-32 degrees C. The warmth of the water alongside the weightlessness properties that it offers, allows exercise to be performed comfortably and safely to achieve muscle building, strengthening, weight loss, reduction in swelling, improved range of motion, lowers heart rate and overall improvement in comfort levels.
What are the benefits of Canine Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy, as a whole, works to help a variety of conditions including orthopaedic, neurological, and soft tissue injuries. Walking and moving around on land can sometimes be quite painful or strenuous for your dog during their rehabilitation, due to the concussive forces placed through the joints.
How can you access Canine Hydrotherapy?
Canine hydrotherapy is an extremely useful tool in rehabilitation; however, it is important to understand that it forms a part of your beloved pet’s recuperation or treatment along with other Veterinary treatments. Your vet MUST refer your pet to a hydro-therapist.
Can hydrotherapy charges be claimed on my Insurance?
You would need to read your policy or speak to your insurer to be sure. If your Hydro-therapist is affiliated to a Professional Body your claim will have more validity.
What is a typical treatment length?
Treatment length will vary dependent upon such factors as the patient’s primary condition, (ie what they have specifically been referred for), any secondary conditions, (weight, respiratory ability, age and even breed). The aim would be to build sessions with repetition. Your pet will be pre and post session showered to firstly acclimatise him / her to the water temperature and secondly to remove chlorine from the coat. Your pet should never be swum if they have open wounds, have sickness or diarrhoea, or have fitted the day of the treatment or if you as the owner have any other concerns which you have referred to your vet.

Your hydro-therapist is Alan Cannell. Alan is an experienced dog keeper with an affinity for all breeds regardless of size. He shares his home with two Bearded Collies – which by reputation are live wires. He got into HT as the result of a previous Beardie, Toby, getting arthritis in his right hip. The benefits of HT on Toby were almost immediate and he underwent HT for the last year of his life. Alan was sold and enrolled on an HT course.
